Quick start: how PureAir™ cleans the air

PureAir™ treats all three contaminant classes as the air recirculates through your HVAC:

  • Particles (dust, pollen, smoke, pet dander) — captured by the MERV 16 Carbon Clean 16® media filter.

  • Germs/bioaerosols — addressed via multi-stage filtration and light-activated processes in the cabinet.

  • Odours/VOCs (cooking, cleaners, paints/off-gassing) — reduced by photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) using a UVA lamp and catalyst.

  • No added ozone — PureAir™ is a non-ozone-generating design.

Because it’s installed in the return duct, the entire home benefits—far more coverage than a single room purifier.

Compatibility & ideal placement (Toronto homes)

  • Models: PCO3-14-16, PCO3-16-16, PCO3-20-16 (nominal ~1400/1600/2000 CFM).
  • Works with: Most forced-air furnaces/air handlers and central AC/heat pumps.
  • Best location: Return plenum before the blower, with straight duct and service access to the door.
  • Clearances: Leave space to remove the filter, PCO cartridge, and UVA lamp. Avoid damp areas.
  • Power: 120/230V (powered accessory). Ensure a dedicated, code-compliant connection.

Lennox PureAir™ Whole-Home Air Purification System

Safety first

  • Power down the furnace/air handler and the PureAir™ before opening the cabinet.

  • Never stare at the UVA lamp when energized. Avoid skin/eye exposure.

  • Use OEM parts only; match your model size.

  • Keep the area in front of the door clear for maintenance.

Seasonal maintenance calendar (Toronto climate)

Use this practical schedule and adjust if you have pets, allergies, smoke exposure, or recent renovations.

  • Every month (Nov–Mar): peek at the cabinet and check airflow/noise. If the home feels stuffy, the media filter may be loading early.

  • Every 3 months (year-round): quick visual on the media filter; replace sooner if visibly gray throughout the pleats.

  • Every 12 months (best in Sep): replace all three:

    • Carbon Clean 16® media filter (MERV 16)

    • PCO catalyst cartridge

    • UVA lamp

  • After renovations/wildfire smoke: replace the media filter immediately.

  • Disposal: follow local rules for UVA lamp recycling; don’t toss in regular trash.

Pro tip: Set a recurring calendar reminder for September so the system is fresh before heating season.

How to replace the media filter (MERV 16)

  1. Turn off power to HVAC and the PureAir™.

  2. Open the door (release latches or screws).

  3. Note the airflow arrow on the old filter (points toward the furnace/air handler).

  4. Slide out the old filter carefully.

  5. Insert the new Carbon Clean 16® with the arrow in the same direction.

  6. Close the door evenly; restore power.

  7. Mark the replacement date on the cabinet and reset reminders (thermostat, if supported).

How to replace the PCO cartridge & UVA lamp

If you’re not comfortable around electrical components, let us handle this step.

  1. Power off HVAC and PureAir™.

  2. Open the cabinet; locate the PCO assembly.

  3. Disconnect the lamp power connector.

  4. Remove the old UVA lamp (use gloves; avoid touching new lamp glass).

  5. Slide out the old PCO cartridge.

  6. Insert the new cartridge fully; install the new lamp.

  7. Reconnect the lamp power; close the cabinet; restore power.

  8. Mark the date and reset reminders.

Troubleshooting: quick diagnostics

1) Persistent odours/VOCs

  • Confirm the UVA lamp is operating (observe safe indicators—do not stare at the lamp).

  • Replace the PCO cartridge if >12 months old.

  • Check/replace the media filter; poor airflow reduces contact time with the catalyst.

2) More dust than usual

  • The MERV 16 filter may be loaded—replace it.

  • Ensure the door is fully sealed; an unseated door causes bypass air and dust.

3) Rooms feel stuffy / reduced airflow

  • Replace the media filter first (high static when loaded).

  • Make sure supply/return grilles are not blocked.

  • Ask us to measure static pressure; in rare cases, duct tweaks or a different cabinet size help.

4) Whistle or vibration at the cabinet

  • Reseat the door; tighten latches.

  • Confirm the filter is seated and gasketed properly.

  • Persistent noise = book a service call to review airflow velocity and mounting.

5) Reminder comes back too soon

  • Verify you replaced filter + cartridge + lamp together.

  • Check that your thermostat or controller reminder intervals match annual service.

Getting the best results in Toronto homes

  • Increase fan runtime. Continuous or scheduled fan time pushes more air through the purifier, improving capture and odour reduction.

  • Source control wins. Ventilate during cooking/cleaning; store paints/solvents in sealed containers; choose low-VOC products.

  • Balance humidity. Proper RH (30–50% in winter) helps comfort and IAQ—consider a humidifier/dehumidifier if needed.

  • Mind renovation dust. Protect returns during sanding; replace the media filter immediately after the project.

Replacement parts checklist (bring this to the counter)

  • Carbon Clean 16® media filter — match cabinet (PCO3-14-16 / 16-16 / 20-16).

  • PCO catalyst cartridge — model-specific.

  • UVA lamp — model-specific.

  • Optional: door gasket, cabinet screws/latches if worn.

Can’t find the model? Open the door and photograph the data label inside the cabinet.

FAQs

Does PureAir™ generate ozone?
No. It’s a non-ozone-generating design and is specified to reduce ozone that may already be circulating indoors.

Is MERV 16 too restrictive for my furnace?
In a properly designed system, MERV 16 works well. Correct sizing and clean ducts are important. If static pressure is high, we’ll recommend adjustments.

Will PureAir™ replace kitchen/bath exhaust?
No. Keep your ventilation fans; PureAir™ complements them by purifying recirculated air.

Can I combine this with other IAQ upgrades?
Yes—ask us about fresh-air ventilation (ERV/HRV), humidity control, and smart thermostats for reminders and runtime optimization.
